Nourished by Nature
There is so much in the news that can make us feel despondent about the demise of the natural world. Between climate change, poaching, species extinctions and man’s degradation of our natural environment it’s sometimes hard to remember the beauty and the wonder. The part of our “job” that Derek and I are most passionate about is the opportunity we have to bring people into experience with nature. Our aim, particularly with our wildlife hides where you can simply sit and be with the wildlife, is that our guests leave remembering their sense of wonder for the natural world. Our goal is that you feel nourished by the incredible wild beauty of the environment and wildlife we are blessed to have in our care.
Below is a selection of images combined with sentiments, which illustrate how our guests felt #nourishedbynature during their safari with us. Because I just love the imperious look of the male Kudu. The kudu is one of my favourite antelope and the males particularly have a way of looking at you with a stare that is quite disarming and penetrating.There is a degree of arrogance about them yet actually they take flight quite easily which perhaps is partly what makes them so interesting.

Because you find the things that you did not set out to discover. If there is a holy grail of birds then Pels fishing owl must be near the top. For me this photograph also illustrates the fragility of what we have. The Pels is wide spread but like so many animals in some parts of Southern Africa is vulnerable or critically endangered. So to that extent for me it a bellwether to how well we look after what we love and how as tourists we contribute to its conservation.

Because safari is taking the time to watch all aspects of nature, large and small, such as a serval zeroing in on its diminuitive prey with its radar-dish ears, using its extraordinary pounce to secure dinner.

Because the Baobab is one of the most iconic sights in Africa. They are often seen individually but not far from Mwamba is a whole forest of these silent sentinels of the bush. Standing amongst these ancient trees many of which have been there for hundreds of years is a humbling experience. If only they could tell us what they have seen what stories they must have. As the sun set the colours began to glow until as the light was gone and they were illuminated by a million stars in a jet black sky.

Because for me the Luangwa is one of the most beautiful places in Africa. It is truly the river of life, a magnet for wildlife but also an ever changing landscape of shapes and light. Because the one thing you quickly learn about Africa is that you never know what you will see. Africa will always surprise you and sometimes reward you but it will never conform. The big cats are such a mix of power, guile, speed and in the case of the Leopard sheer beauty. She was well aware of us but remained elusive for over two days until our morning of departure!

Because these small birds can transform an empty space into a seething mass of black and create a cacophony of sound unlike anything else you have seen or heard. On our morning drive we were quite suddenly immersed and mesmerised by the sight and sound of hundreds of thousands, maybe a million or more Quelea performing their aerial ballet swaying and dancing creating the most exquisite choreography until for no obvious reason they were gone, moved to a new location to repeat one of Africa’s most unusual but dramatic spectacles.
