As a young guide in the South Luangwa, Derek Shenton witnessed year on year the benefits of tourism on conservation, and how every visit of guests reaped a reward for the wildlife in the area. Being the third-generation conservationist that he is, this ethos has perpetuated into the entire Shenton Safaris family and is a major part of the camp’s operations.
Conservation South Luangwa
Derek is on the board of Conservation South Luangwa and has always supported them in their growth and development. Conservation South Luangwa’s mission statement is: ‘To work with community and conservation partners in the protection of the wildlife and habitats of the South Luangwa ecosystem.’
Juliet was one of the founding members of Project Luangwa. Project Luangwa combines the resources of a select group of camps in the South Luangwa and makes an effective difference to many in the entire region.
A key aspect to any guest’s experience with us, the Shenton’s Plot grows roughly 80% of the fresh produce consumed in camp. This incredible green gem is maintained through Derek’s years of farming experience and passion for eco-sustainable farming.
Partnering with the Land
A substantial part of Shenton Safaris’ operation involves road grading. This isn’t just for smooth roads for our guests to enjoy, but they also serve as fire breakers and rapid delivery of anti-poaching teams throughout the northern area of the South Luangwa National Park.
Art for Conservation
We are delighted to launch ‘Art for Conservation’. This project is the birth child of Juliet Shenton; where we will be collaborating with local artists to sell their imagery, donating 20% of the proceeds to the Conservation or Community project of our guests’ choice.
