Unique Wildlife Camps

Kaingo and Mwamba camps are the creations of the Shenton family, which has a proud history of three generations of wildlife conservation in Southern Africa. Derek Shenton, who built and now runs these camps with his wife Juliet, is the son of Barry Shenton, a former Parks Ranger in Luangwa and former Warden of Kafue National Park.

Derek has developed Kaingo and Mwamba into camps that are well known for exceptional game-viewing in a beautiful, yet relaxed atmosphere. In spite of numerous opportunities to expand we have kept our operation intimate, Kaingo 12 beds and Mwamba 6 beds, to ensure our guests have an exclusive and unique wildlife experience second to none. Feel free to have a look at the photos of our Kaingo and Mwamba camps.

Fresh supplies for the camp are grown at the Kaingo plot near the Mfuwe airport. Guests to Kaingo and Mwamba are guaranteed a highly natural and personalized experience.

Wildlife Conservation

Fluent in the local language, Nyanja, and influenced by his background in conservation, Derek has integrated conservation into all aspects of Shenton Safaris, from refuse removal to anti-poaching patrols, to designing and maintaining a low impact road network of game viewing loops.

Derek was one of the founding members of the South Luangwa Conservation Society (SLCS) and remains on the board. He is also an ‘Honorary Ranger” in South Luangwa National Park. Realizing that conservation is not limited to the environment, but extends to the local people, Shenton Safaris also actively supports the development of local schools, villages, clinics and individuals through the local chief, and more recently through Project Luangwa.

The Best Game Viewing

A significant advantage Shenton Safaris has over most other operations is that its camps, Kaingo and Mwamba, are located deep within the most game-intensive area of the South Luangwa National Park. Our camps are considered to be situated in the very best game viewing area of South Luangwa in terms of both abundance and access to game.

The Wildlife Experience of a Lifetime

Situated on the west bank of the Luangwa river opposite the Nsefu sector, we are completely national park bound! The area around Kaingo and Mwamba allows visitors to experience this ancient valley without interference from human settlement. This also means that wildlife is able to follow its natural migrations undisturbed by fishing or hunting by humans. Deep in the park and far from the busy Mfuwe area, visitors to our camps also enjoy the solitude of being away from other safari vehicles – there are no other camps in the immediate game-viewing area.

For almost 20 years we have been sending clients home having had the wildlife experience of a lifetime (just as an aside – 95% of our guests see leopard). 60% of all guests who come and stay with us love it so much (have a look at the reviews), they soon come back again.
