As you prepare for your upcoming safari adventure with Shenton Safaris, it’s important to pack wisely to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable journey.
In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the essential items to bring on your safari, ensuring you’re well-prepared for the sights, sounds, and wonders that await you in the heart of the Zambian bush.
Clothing
When it comes to clothing, prioritize comfort and functionality. Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics in neutral colours to blend in with the surroundings. Here’s what you should include in your safari wardrobe:
- Long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect against the sun, insects, and thorny vegetation.
- Sturdy, closed-toe shoes or boots for walking safaris or bush walks.
- A lightweight jacket or fleece for cool mornings and evenings.

Protection from the elements
Safaris often take place in remote and diverse environments, so it’s essential to be prepared for different weather conditions. Don’t forget to pack the following:
- Sunscreen with a high SPF.
- Insect repellent with DEET or natural alternatives.
- Sunglasses to protect your eyes from the glare of the sun.
- A wide-brimmed hat or cap for sun protection.

Photography and Electronics
Preserving memories of your safari adventure is crucial. Make sure to bring the right equipment to capture those breathtaking moments:
- A digital camera or DSLR with extra memory cards and batteries.
- A portable power bank to keep your devices charged.
- Adapters and converters for power outlets (for your convenience Kaingo and Mwamba both have international plug sockets.)

- Depending on the setting and subject, consider bringing lenses that suit your photographic needs:
- For hide photography, extreme wide-angle lenses, for example, a 10-22mm and a 70-200mm lens, are often used.
- On game drives and walks, a 100-400mm lens is generally sufficient for most subjects, although this lens might be too close for hide photography.
- If you’re looking to minimize the number of lenses you bring, a wide-angle lens and a 100-400mm lens would be a good combination.

Practical Essentials
There are several practical items that will prove invaluable during your safari.
Don’t leave home without:
- A sturdy backpack or daypack to carry your essentials during game drives or walks.
- A headlamp or flashlight for night-time activities and campsite navigation.
- A basic first aid kit containing essential medications, antihistamine and antiseptic wipes.
- Travel documents, including passports, visas, and a copy of your itinerary.
- Extra cash for visits to Mfuwe (most shops only accept cash and preferably US dollars) and for gratuity.
- Binoculars for enhanced wildlife viewing.

Optional Extras
Consider adding these optional items to enhance your safari experience
- A field guidebook to identify the flora and fauna you encounter.
- A lightweight, quick-drying towel for various activities.
- A journal or notebook to record your safari memories.

A well-prepared packing list is essential to ensure a smooth and enjoyable safari adventure. By bringing the right clothing, protection from the elements, photography equipment, practical essentials, and optional extras, you’ll be equipped for an unforgettable journey into the heart of the bush.

I do have a spare camera with me ( If one stops working, you will be buggered… ) and being short-sighted, spare glasses as well. You never know.
