They arrived in their thousands approximately three weeks ago and some staked out this section of the Luangwa River’s bank, deeming it the perfect place to colonise.

The nesting site is a short drive from Kaingo Camp and with a characteristic Shenton hide placed in prime position, viewing of the birds is incredible.

At the nesting site it is all about location and the birds squabble constantly as they seek to stake out the best site to raise their young. Hackles raised, two birds threaten each other . . .

the threats spilling over into violence, as is often the case.

But the Bee-eaters are not the only specie with their eyes on this prime bit of real estate, as Wire-tailed swallows have also placed deposits on spots and they guard them fiercely.
