May 25th.

A few days before Mwamba Bush Camp opened, the staff busy with the final touches of camp construction reported that they had heard a lot of commotion during the night: lion calling, hyenas making a lot of hysterical noises, etc.

It is only later in the morning that one of the staff saw something strange down near the Mwamba River, not far from one of the chalets. It was a dead hyena!

According to the tracks found around it, a male lion was probably the cause of its death, via a strong bite behind the head. The hyena was covered in mud, probably from having been in the shallow river just while fighting the lion. Lions and hyenas are not friends, and it is not uncommon for lions to kill the hyenas, if the opportunity rises.

No wonder the staff heard commotion that night!
