Drawing New Lines

The fragmentation of a pride of lions that sometimes occurs when male lions are busy drawing new lines of dominance, often has tragic results. The Hollywood pride were recently spotted by Patrick and his guests feeding on an adult male waterbuck. Thirteen of them shared the 300 kg feast that they had managed to pull down close to Kaingo Camp’s Ebony Grove.

They gave up the remains of the kill to hyaenas that night and then in the early hours of the following morning, pandemonium struck as three male lions from further inland investigated the sounds of the kill and found the pride ensconced on the beach, at the mouth of the Kamima stream.

The Hollywoods contain a number adult females and some juvenile females and males, the latter who bore the brunt of the trio’s acts of dominance. That morning we awoke to a camp full of juvenile lions, two of whom remained in camp as the dominant males’ roars reverberated through the Ebony Grove.

The curiousity of one of the young males obviously got the better of him:

With roars still coming from the grove, we drove out to see if we could identify the newcomers and also to see what Tangua’s and Nyuma’s reactions would be, as they are the dominant male lions in the area and service both the Nsefu pride and the Hollywoods.

Hopefully the next few months of dominance by the new males, will bring stability among the prides.
